A picture of two African-American teenage girls' faces.Did you know that there are over 104,000 children and youth in foster care in this country waiting for permanent families? November is National Adoption Month—a time when we intensify our efforts to raise awareness about the urgent need for adoptive families for these children and youth.

This year, National Adoption Month is taking a new approach—helping states harness the power of social media to find families for children and youth waiting in foster care. The campaign is being launched “virtually” throughout November by using social media in an unprecedented way to reach out to key stakeholders. Explore this year’s National Adoption Month website to find resources for professionals, families considering adoption, and youth awaiting adoption. Adoption and child welfare professionals will find information to help their agencies get started using social media, sample messages and ideas, and powerful videos that tell the stories of children and youth waiting for adoption. Place a National Adoption Month widget on your organization’s webpage, post a Facebook message, or use one of our sample Tweets to promote National Adoption Month.

We hope you will consider ways you can use social media to let others know about National Adoption Month and the many children in foster care waiting for permanent families.

Funded by the Children’s Bureau, the National Adoption Month initiative is a joint effort between AdoptUSKids and Child Welfare Information Gateway.
