Head Start Leaders Recognized as “Champions of Change”

A group of Head Start leaders were recognized by the Obama Administration as “Champions of Change” during a ceremony at the White House on June 18, 2012. This recognition ceremony is part of President Obama’s “Winning the Future” initiative. Each week, the White House recognizes a different group of Americans doing extraordinary work, who embody the President’s goal of building an America that will win the future.

The Head Start Champions of Change were commended for their work in strengthening Head Start programs and making a difference in the lives of children and families served by the programs. Dr. Edward Ziegler and Dr. Barry Brazleton were among those recognized for their lifelong contributions to research, advocacy, and policy work in Head Start and Early Head Start. In addition, the group consisted of a Head Start advocates, teachers, directors, and parents.

The Champions later participated in a discussion with Deputy Assistant for Early Childhood Development, Linda K. Smith, Director of the Office of Head Start, Yvette Sanchez Fuentes, and White House staff to share their ideas on strengthening Head Start through improving quality and maintaining access for families.
