Region 1 - Boston
Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont

May 16–18, 2007 The Young Children Without Homes National Conference will take place in Newton, MA. Featured speakers include Marian Wright Edelman, Dr. Jack Shonkoff and Dr. T. Berry Brazelton. Workshops that highlight best practices for serving young homeless children include a workshop on successful strategies for restoring father who experience homelessness to families and communities.

May 18, 2007 Boston Fathers and Family Network at the Children's Trust Fund, Boston, MA Eric Tucker, Facilitator for the Relationships for Real Life Program led by the Father Friendly Initiative will be sharing about his experiences leading marriage/relationship education groups for low-income individuals and couples. This highly regarded program has served over 200 participants in a variety of community based settings including a fatherhood program, neighborhood health center, local hospital and a charter school. The Network, one of five that are sponsored across the state by the Massachusetts Children's Trust Fund, provides individuals, practitioners, and organizations that are working to advance healthy father involvement with regular opportunities to share information, best practices, and resources on fathering and family life.

The Texas House passed HB2683 – 1% Solution funding for healthy marriage initiatives, and HB2685 – Premarital Education. Now it must pass in the Senate.

There is one more bill HB2685 – Marriage Restoration Education; it deals with education for couples on the brink of divorce and longer waiting periods. It is still in calendar committee.

Grantee WAIT Training will host a Colorado Family Strengthening Workgroup in conjunction with SmartMarriages Denver, CO
This full-day event will bring together state and local human services managers and nonprofit human services providers in a mobilizing effort to develop and expand working relationships and strengthen families across Colorado.

** NEWS
The State of Utah has agreed to allow 1% of TANF funds to be used for marriage education and healthy marriage initiatives. The estimated value of this investment is $750,000. The Director of the Utah Marriage Commission, Melanie Reese, submitted a formal plan for use of the funds which includes research, public awareness, and education services.
