Description:
This funding for CHARN is part of a broader effort by the Department of Health and Human Services to develop and maintain a comprehensive, interoperable, and sustainable data network infrastructure to collect, link, and analyze data from multiple sources to facilitate comparative effectiveness research (CER).  The CHARN infrastructure was established in September 2010 to be a national resource for research in the safety net. This funding aims to maintain, strengthen, and leverage this infrastructure for the sake of advancing research and analysis that improves quality, outcomes and disparities in underserved communities. HRSA is interested in applicants who have demonstrated significantly advanced capabilities and capacity as well as recent experience in the following: 1) establishing and participating in a research-quality data network; 2) receiving and standardizing clinical data within a centralized data warehouse for the purpose of research activities; 3) participating in a large scale collaborative research infrastructure; and 4) facilitating the participation of clinicians and other health center personnel in research activities. HRSA also seeks applicants who currently maintain a database of safety net clinical data that can be expanded under this cooperative agreement.  CHARN is a practice-based network that is comprised of four (4) research nodes¿coalitions of health centers including community health centers and HIV clinics, each of which is affiliated with an academic research center¿ and one (1) data coordinating center.  CHARN provides an infrastructure in the safety net community that supports the conduct of collaborative CER and patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR).
