Vermont Supports Dads as Parents, Partners and Providers

The 2013 Vermont Fatherhood conference held on June 11th at the Vermont Statehouse attracted nearly 140 attendees including dads and staff from many agencies across the state. With the theme, “Dads as Parents, Partners and Providers,” Dave Yacovone, Commissioner of the Department of Children and Families offered welcoming remarks on how positive fathering benefits the lives of children. The day long event offered numerous opportunities for dialogue, education and inspiration between dads and service providers. Many were able to share their experiences and views during open sessions with speakers, at the World Café small group activity and during the afternoon workshops. Workshop topics highlighted strategies for engaging dads in community contexts, parenting teenagers, understanding child support services, preventing domestic violence and learning about the Nurturing Fathers Program. The environment allowed for candid exchanges between dads, community members and service providers on how to promote responsible fathering across Vermont. The take-away message – Empowered dads are the greatest ambassadors for positive fathering in families and communities.

Vermont DCF has recently published a Vermont Fatherhood Resource Guide that lists national, statewide and community-based resources for dads, family members and service providers. Available at:
