Health and Human Services (HHS) & Midwest Alliance of Sovereign Tribes (MAST)
Region V (Bemidji Area) Tribal Consultation Session
2014 - Green Bay, WI
The Obama Administration is strongly committed to our nation-to-nation relationship with tribal governments, continually working to ensure tribal communities have a meaningful voice in policy development, and improved services and consultation efforts in Indian Country. In support of this commitment, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services hosts regional tribal consultation sessions annually to address, at a more local level, how the Department can continue to improve outreach and coordination and to discuss programmatic issues and overall concerns with tribes.
On February 26-27, 2014, Administration for Children and Families, ROV Deputy Regional Administrator, Kathie Gray, along with colleagues, Program Analyst/Tribal Liaison, Nancy Sanchez, Child Welfare (CW) Manager, Angela Green and CW Specialist, Ruby Flagg, traveled to Green Bay, WI, to attend the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) & Midwest Alliance of Sovereign Tribes (MAST) 2014 Consultation Session.
Individual Tribal members met with HHS Regional Officials, one-on-one, to discuss issues specific to their Tribe. Also, Kim Romine, Deputy Commissioner, Administration for Native Americans, ACF, held HHS Grants Matrix training, giving an overview of the newly-developed HHS Grants Eligibility Tool which allows Tribes to access and compare information on HHS Grants from across the Department.
The Tribal Consultation Session followed, purpose being for HHS national and regional leadership to update Bemidji-Area tribal officials on responses to 2013 ROV Consultation issues/accomplishments, hear from Area Tribal leadership on current pressing issues, then dialogue on next steps.
