Organizational Description

Virginia Community Action Partnership (VACAP) is the Statewide membership association for 32 private and public Community Action Agencies (CAAs).  VACAP’s members share a common vision of building self-sufficiency for strong families and communities throughout Virginia.

Use(s) of Administration for Children and Families (ACF) Program Funds

Virginia Community Partnership’s (VACAP) “Share and Aware Project” will: (1) create an up-to-date inventory of community economic development projects in Virginia and nearby States; (2) analyze the significant characteristics of exemplary economic development models; and (3) assess barriers to implementing economic development projects.  VACAP will design one tier of training and technical assistance for novices to economic development and a second tier of advanced training which will incorporate program models and lessons learned from successful CAA economic development projects in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.  VACAP’s “Share and Aware Project” has the support of the National Community Action Partnership, Virginia Community Development Corporation, Local Initiatives Support Corporations (LISC), Rural LISC, and Support to Eliminate Poverty (STEP, Inc.).

Expected Outcomes

VACAP will invite representatives from all 32 CAAs to complete Community Economic Development: Basic Training.  In partnership with “Think Outside,” VACAP will develop a three-day pilot program, “Leadership Training in Community Development,” to prepare leaders to think strategically, anticipate change, and be a catalyst for organizational and community renewal.  Sessions will be held at the Adventure Sports Center International (ASCI) in Garrett County, Maryland.  The Association’s Virtual CAP web site will publicize project information. VACAP will collaborate with its national partners on project development and implementation.
