CB Data Highlighted in New Infographic on Child Abuse & Neglect from the Institute of Medicine

A new infographic from the Institute of Medicine uses data from ACF's Children's Bureau's "Child Maltreatment 2011" report to illustrate some of the sobering realities of child abuse and neglect in the United States.

Some of the facts found in the report:

  • There are more than 6 million children involved in reports to child protective services annually 
  • More than 3 out of 4 reported cases are for neglect, which can include failing to provide food, clothing, adequate supervision, medical care, and other elements necessary for child wellbeing

Risk factors for child abuse and neglect include: 

  • Depression
  • Single-parent households
  • Early-child bearing
  • Social isolation 
  • Poverty
  • Drug abuse
