Child population numbers are on a State-by-State basis, the more States that are used in data analysis the larger the child population number.

1 The second rate for 2000 includes those States that provided additional child fatalities reported by agencies other than CPS. The other agencies include the coroner's office and fatality review boards. Back

This chart lists the years 1996-2000 (2000 is listed twice as the second listing includes additional child fatalities reported by agencies other than CPS) and lists the child population (of all States reporting) in the second column. The third column lists the number of child fatalities in each year while the fourth lists the rate of child fatalities per 100,000 children each year. The fifth column lists the number of States reporting and the sixth lists the total child population including those States who did not report. The last column estimates the number of child fatalities among all States based on the rate that was calculated and the total child population.
