Data source: Child File, Agency File, and SDC.
A national estimate of 2,600,000 referrals was calculated by multiplying the national referral rate (35.9) by the national population for all 51 States (72,894,483). The result was rounded to the nearest 100,000.
1For those States
that submitted the Child File, the screened-in number is the sum of
the reports by disposition. For SDC States, the number is taken
directly from the State?s report form. back
2 The national
referral rate, 35.9 referrals per 1,000 children in the population,
was calculated from the total number of referrals and the child
populations in the 39 States reporting both screened in and
screened-out referrals. back
This table indicates the numbers and percentages of referrals that were screened in and screened out during the year 2002. The first column lists the name of each State and the second indicates the child population for the corresponding State. The third column lists the number of screened-out referrals followed by a listing of the percentage of these screened-out referrals. The fifth and sixth columns, similarly, indicate the numbers and rates of screened-in referrals. The seventh column adds the number of screened-out and screened-in referrals for a column with the total number of referrals for each State. The last column lists the total rate of referrals for each State. The total number of referrals for all of the States was an estimated 2,600,000 with a rate of 35.9 of the total child population.
