A national estimate of 3,193,000 children who were the subjects of an investigation or assessment was calculated by multiplying the child disposition rate (43.8) by the national population (72,894,483) and dividing by 1,000. The total was rounded to the nearest 1,000.

¹ The national child disposition rate was computed by dividing the total count of children who were the subjects of an investigation (3,134,694) by the child population for the 50 States that reported this data (71,514,558) and multiplying by 1,000. back

This table lists the number of children who were the subjects of an investigation or assessment by disposition type. The first column list each State and is followed by columns listing the number of children who were part of a substantiated, indicated, alternative response victim, alternative response nonvictim, unsubstantiated, intentionally false, closed without a finding, other, or unknown investigation or assessment. The table has a column that lists the total number of dispositions. For all of the States combined, the total number of dispositions was 3,134,694. The child disposition rate is the final column on the table. The national disposition rate was 43.8.
