With regard to Section B: Child Maltreatment Data, two of the child fatalities reported in 1998 involved families known to the child welfare services. Also, with respect to maltreatment type of child victims, the majority of reports made to child welfare services involved “other ” types of maltreatment. These reports generally included threat of harm, threat of neglect, or threat of abuse. Several reports include more than one type of abuse.

Regarding Section C: Children in Foster Care, Number of Children - To improve data accuracy, a change in management information system procedures was made to eliminate child removal episodes that were erroneously left open due to conversion errors. This resulted in the closure of many cases where children had been discharged from care prior to the modification. All of these children were reported in error. Therefore, the data indicate that there were 256 fewer children in care on October 1, 1998 (2,185) than on September 30, 1998 (2,441).
