All data are from the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF), Child Abuse and Neglect Tracking System (CANTS), which tracks all child abuse investigations and early-warning reports.

Item 2:The duplicated count of children who were the subject of a report is 14,492; the unduplicated count is 10,763.

Item 3: Rhode Island can count more than one report source per report.

Item 4: The category "closed without a finding" (D) includes "unable to complete." Pending reports (149) were not reported in 1995.

Item 5: For children, Rhode Island reports both an unduplicated count (10,296) and a duplicated count (14,264).

Item 6:Rhode Island has a two-tier system, with the highest disposition being "reason to suspect." These cases are counted by the NCANDS as substantiated.
