Item 1.1: These numbers are for the month of September 1997, a point in time. The children and families include families who requested help, families for whom a court ordered supervision for some reason, families for whom a home evaluation was requested by another county or State or a court, and children who were in need of supervision. These children and families may or may not be child abuse/neglect cases. These services include assisting individuals and families to make appropriate use of physical and mental health resources, counseling and referrals to family planning, counseling unmarried parents, preventing unnecessary institutional care, improving nutrition, improving living arrangements, making the best use of income and resources, improving parenting, improving individual functioning, improving communication skills, removing barriers to employment, and providing information and referral services.

Items 2.3 and 3.2: "Other Dispositions" consist of "alleged perpetrator under age 12." The total of 2.3.A-G is higher than 2.1.B because it includes several reports from the previous year that were investigated in 1997.

Item 6.1: More than one perpetrator per child may be recorded.
