Item 1.1: Maryland reported that 3,433 families received services such as continuing CPS, Intensive Family Services or Families Now. Each family could have received any number of additional support services, e.g., addiction counseling, counseling, day care, crisis intervention, etc. The State?s data collection system does not track preventive services received from community services agencies outside the DSS system.
Item 2.3: "Other Dispositions" includes "Requests of Another Agency" cases, in which a worker makes a contact for another jurisdiction. These require no dispositional finding.
Item 3.2: The estimated 14,198 substantiated children is based on a factor of 1.6 children per family.
Item 4.4: While the State does not keep track of individual victims by Hispanic ethnicity, it estimated that 5 percent of the child victims were of Hispanic ethnicity.
Item 4.5: While the State does not keep track of individual victims by race, it estimated that 55 percent of the child abuse cases were White and 40 percent were African American.
Item 7.1: This reflects the number of FTE?s allotted for CPS in December 1997. The State Office does not designate tasks (screening, investigations, continuing service) for these positions. Local departments determine use based on their needs.
Item 7.3: Response time for abuse (physical, sexual, and mental injury abuse) must be within 24 hours of the report. Response time for neglect (mental injury neglect) must be within 5 calendar days of the report. The number of reports that meet the priority standard was estimated at 96 percent for abuse and 93 percent for neglect, based on a one-month sample.
