Item 2.3: Multiple reports of an abuse/neglect situation are merged into one investigation. Therefore, the total number of investigations conducted will be lower than the number of reports referred for investigation.

Items 2.3.F and 3.2 F: "Other" includes "unable to determine" and "administrative closure." These categories cover many reports assigned for investigation for which investigations were not completed.

Item 3.5: Children counted in this item were also counted in Item 3.3.

Item 4.1: Victims may have been counted under multiple types of abuse/neglect for the same incident.

Item 5.1: These data are captured on the automated statewide Child and Adult Protective Services System. However, because fatalities are not linked to the investigation stage, some fatalities that occurred in 1997 may have resulted from investigations conducted in previous years.

Item 6.1: Relationship is relationship to the oldest victim.

Item 7.2: This information is reported for fiscal year 1997 rather than calendar year.

Item 7.4.B: This is number of investigations, not reports.
