This section contains the most recent codebooks or survey instruments for the Child File, Agency File, and Summary Data Component.

NCANDS Child File - Codebook – The Child File data submission contains case-level data. States submit case-level data by constructing an electronic file of child-specific records for each report of alleged child abuse and neglect that received a CPS response. Only completed reports that resulted in a disposition (finding) during the reporting year are submitted in each state’s data file. The Child File is supplemented by agency-level aggregate statistics in a separate data submission called the Agency File. States are asked to submit both the Child File and the Agency File each year. This codebook shows the data elements included in a Child File submission, along with definitions, values, and technical guidance provided to states.

NCANDS Agency File - Codebook – The Agency File contains data that are not reportable at the child-specific level and often gathered from agencies external to CPS. The Agency File is a supplement to a case-level data file called the Child File. States are asked to submit both the Child File and the Agency File each year. This codebook shows the data elements included in an Agency File submission, along with definitions, values, and technical guidance provided to states.

NCANDS Summary Data Component - Survey Instrument – Prior to 2012, states that were not able to submit case-level data in the Child File submitted an aggregate data file called the Summary Data Component (SDC). The SDC was discontinued in 2012 when all states developed the capacity to submit case-level data. This instrument shows the data elements included in a Summary Data Component submission, along with definitions, values, and technical guidance provided to states.
