President Bush’s Good Start, Grow Smart early childhood initiative prepares children to read and succeed in school through improved early childhood development programs. The Child Care Bureau (CCB) works to strengthen early learning for young children in formal and informal child care settings by providing technical assistance in support of the following:

  • Voluntary State guidelines for children ages 3 to 5 on literacy, language, prereading, and math that align with State K-12 standards.
  • Statewide professional development and training of child care teachers, providers, and administrators, enabling them to support the school readiness of children.
  • Coordination across early childhood programs and funding streams.

The President knows that the work to make sure no child is left behind starts well before kindergarten. Good Start, Grow Smart challenges all of us who care for children –– parents, extended family, child care providers, and policymakers –– to work together to prepare them to succeed in school and in life.
