Acknowledgments
This report reflects the contributions of many people, to whom we would like to express our appreciation. This report would not have been possible without the cooperation of staff at each of the intermediary organizations and the grassroots organizations that we visited. During the course of our research visits, they gave generously of their knowledge and time to help us understand their efforts to improve the capacity of nonprofit social service organizations. We are particularly grateful for the contributions of staff from: Associated Black Charities, United Way of Massachusetts Bay, Black Ministerial Alliance, Emmanuel Gospel Center; Boston Ten-Point Coalition, Father Joe's Villages, Good Samaritan Ministries, JVA Consulting, Local Initiatives Support Corporation Palm Beach, Mennonite Economic Development Associates, Metro Denver Black Church Initiative, Nueva Esperanza, Seedco, and Urban Strategies Council.
We have benefited from the guidance of Nancye Campbell of the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. ACF conceived and funded this project. We would also like to thank HHS staff, particularly Thom Campbell, Kelly Cowles, and Lisa Gale, for their helpful comments.
At Branch Associates, Patti Andes, Fiona Jamison, and Virginia Smith participated in site visits. We are especially thankful to our partners at Abt Associates. JoAnn Jastrzab has provided invaluable support and insights that helped shape this report. At Abt, Rahn Dorsey, Leanne Giordono, Anne Hazlett, Derrick James, Suzanne Klein, Glen Schneider, and Jesse Valente also participated in site visits and contributed to the analysis.
Linda Jucovy carefully edited the report and Maxine Sherman and Gena Carlton provided additional editing and prepared it for production.
