Electronic Payments
Employers send more than half the income withheld for child support to states electronically. State child support agencies encourage both employers and noncustodial parents (direct payers) to pay by Electronic Funds Transfer/Electronic Data Interchange (EFT/EDI). See the State EFT-EDI Contacts and Program Information for each state’s requirements and to learn how to send an online payment to the states that offer online payment services.
Remember that all employer-withheld payments for child support (except payments ordered by a tribe) must be sent to the state disbursement unit (SDU).
Benefits of using EFT/EDI to send payments:
- Saves money – no more printing and mailing paper checks and remittance statements
- Increases accuracy – fewer errors than manual data entry processing
- Saves time – eliminates check handling and delays from lost or misdirected mail
Electronic child support payments will get to custodial parents and their children faster.
