The National Domestic Violence Hotline is a toll-free line that is available
to callers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Hotline serves as a critical
partner in the prevention and resource assistance efforts of the Domestic
Violence Resource Network. The Hotline employs bilingual advocates, technology
for callers who are deaf and hearing impaired, access to translators in
139 languages, and materials in a variety of formats and languages. The
Hotline opened on February 21, 1996 and has received more than 1.2 million
calls as of September 30, 2004.
Specifically, the National Domestic Violence Hotline offers:
- Crisis intervention by helping the caller identify problems and possible
solutions, including making plans for safety in an emergency;
- Referrals to battered women’s shelters and programs, social service
agencies, legal programs, and other groups and organizations willing to
help;
- Information and resources for individuals wanting to learn more about
domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault, and intervention programs
for batterers; and
- Information about working through the criminal justice system.
