Step 4: Prepare Your Writing Sample

All applicants are asked to submit a writing sample using a specific writing topic. Your writing sample will help determine the potential quality of your written work. Please note that submitting pre-published work is not advised and will not be considered an acceptable writing sample.

To complete this step,

  • First, view how we measure writing samples.
  • Next, write 3 paragraphs (maximum) using the following writing topic:

    Describe and support with details, your strengths as a grant reviewer that clearly demonstrates your ability to participate in competitive reviews. (New reviewers can describe potential strengths.)

How We Measure Writing Samples

Writing samples are evaluated for quality of the following components: Development, Organization, and Writing Standards.

DEVELOPMENT
Clear central idea
Supporting details
Relevance to writing topic
ORGANIZATION
Well-developed paragraphs
Clear transitions
Natural and fluent
WRITING STANDARDS
Use of complete sentences and varied sentence structure
Correct spelling, usage/agreement, punctuation, and capitalization
