Definition

A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa. Terms such as "Haitian" or "Negro" can be used in addition to "Black or African American."

Guidance

Enter the one digit code indicating whether the child's race is Black or African American.

This item applies to each child receiving care. Select “yes” for as many races as reported by the family. (Each child should have at least one race coded “yes.” Multi-racial children should have a “1” in more than one race field.)

Note that a zero is used for a specific reason; for “unknown/not reported” use a blank or space.
