National Resources for Implementation: Cooperative Extension Services and SCORE

Focus:

This call offered information on two national networks with expertise useful to AFI Projects.

Key Points:
  • SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) is an independent nonprofit association of business people who provide training in small business development and on specific business topics.
    • SCORE, which is affiliated with the U. S. Small Business Administration, provides its services on-line via a Web site (www.score.org), through local chapter members, and through publications and technical assistance.
    • Services include one-on-one mentoring and coaching in person and on-line as well as classroom-based training, and a wide range of publications on general and specialized business topics.
    • SCORE resources are often available in many languages, and counselors from diverse cultural backgrounds are available in many areas of the country.
  • CSREES (Cooperative State Research, Extension and Education Services) is the formal name for the network of services implemented on a local level by the U.S. Department of Agriculture via staff based at 107 land-grant colleges and universities, including historically black institutions, tribal colleges, and institutions serving the territories ( www.csrees.usda.gov ).
    • Extension services are active in urban as well as rural areas.
    • Extension services work with many AFI Projects to provide financial education for participants, either with customized curricula or using curricula already developed by extension staff.
    • Extension services have become very active in supporting tax filing assistance, another area of common activity with AFI Projects.
    • Extension services also implement a number of local community development activities that may be coordinated with AFI or asset-building efforts.
