The Avenida Guadalupe Association (AGA) of San Antonio, Texas, will conduct a multi-faceted approach to economic development and job creation in the neighborhood defined by San Antonio's Guadalupe Westside Community Plan. The AGA approach includes four components. First, AGA will redevelop a vacant building (owned by AGA at 1312 Guadalupe Street) for commercial office space. Leasing documentation has been secured from Community First Health Plan (CFHP), and the expansion of CFHP’s call center would yield a minimum of 30 new, full-time, living wage jobs. Second, AGA will improve the space it currently leases to the Guadalupe Street Coffee House, in order to add a commercial kitchen and additional seating areas. Third, AGA will create a subsidiary management company to operate its residential and commercial real estate, and to become a vehicle for community-based employment. Last, AGA will continue its cooperative work with the Westside Development Corporation, assisting neighborhood-based businesses to secure affordable investment capital. AGA anticipates that its entire project will create a minimum of 43 full-time, permanent jobs primarily in health care and real estate. |

Project Description |

Northwest Side Community Development Corporation proposes to make a $650,000 low-interest loan to Nature Tech, a new company that will manufacture cellulose insulation, a high performance insulation made primarily from recycled newspapers. Nature Tech’s most recent patent-pending fire-retarding technology results in a process that dramatically reduces the combustibility of insulation material, while the added dust removal component considerably eliminates a major portion of air-borne insulation dust. This new “green” technology focuses on using recycled newsprint, which makes the product more cost-friendly than fiberglass insulation—which has previously predominated in the industry—also making it more attractive to homeowners and installation contractors. The loan will be used for equipment and working capital for the new company that will, in turn, create at least 43 permanent full-time jobs for low income individuals. |
