    The Office of Community Services is seeking experienced professionals to participate in reviewing grant applications for several programs including Assets for Independence (AFI).  The office is particularly eager to identify potential reviewers with experience in administering or studying effective service delivery.  While OCS selects fewer than 20 individuals to assist with reviewing applications for AFI grant,  opportunities are also available for other OCS grant reviews.

  • Meet A Few AFI Project Participants

    There is no "average" participant in this program: each differs in background, skills, and challenges. What they do share is a determination to make the most of a few dollars from each small paycheck. They also share an intensive educational process designed to increase their knowledge of finances and money management. By the time participants purchase an asset with their IDA savings, they are well on their way to being economically self-sufficient for the long-term. This is good for them and great for their communities.

    AFI is a demonstration program established to investigate new strategies for helping low-income families become economically self-sufficient. To better evaluate effective projects, the Office of Community Services is financing a long-term national process and impact evaluation of the program. Each AFI Project provides annual information for the study, and the program evaluation team conducts intensive data collection and interviews at a small but representative number of projects. The evaluation also includes information about the impact of the program on a group of approximately 600 individual project participants.
