Figure 1. Most serious type of maltreatment.
It is a bar graph that shows the percentage of children aged 2 or younger in the NSCAW sample who reportedly suffered one of four different kinds of maltreatment as their most serious experience of maltreatment. Four major types of maltreatment are reported and shown on the horizontal axis: the caregiver’s failure to supervise the child, the caregiver’s failure to provide for the child, physical maltreatment, and sexual maltreatment. The vertical axis shows, for each type of alleged maltreatment, the percentage of children aged 2 or younger (that is, infants and toddlers) who allegedly experienced that type of maltreatment as the most serious type suffered, according to caseworker report.
The first bar shows that 36 percent of infants and toddlers in the sample allegedly experienced a caregiver’s failure to supervise as the most serious type of maltreatment. The second bar shows that 31 percent allegedly experienced a caregiver’s failure to provide for the child as the most serious type of maltreatment. The third bar shows that 27 percent allegedly experienced physical maltreatment as the most serious type. The fourth bar shows that 6 percent allegedly experienced sexual maltreatment as the most serious type.
