Head Start’s Ninth National Research Conference

Presented by
The Administration for Children and Families (ACF), a Federal agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, is responsible for Federal programs that promote the economic and social well-being of families, children, individuals, and communities. ACF programs include family assistance (welfare), child support, child care, Head Start, and child welfare among others. The various programs aim to empower families and individuals to increase their own economic independence and productivity; promote strong, healthy, supportive communities that have a positive impact on children; encourage partnerships that enable solutions that transcend traditional agency boundaries; and foster a strong commitment to working with people with developmental disabilities, refugees, and migrants to address their needs, strengths, and abilities.

With planning by
Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health addresses the child, adolescent, and reproductive health conditions that confront communities throughout the world, with a particular focus on the needs of the community in which the department is located in upper Manhattan. The department contributes to the improvement of community health by supporting activities and programs that educate future generations of public health workers and provide direct services to populations in need, including Head Start and Early Head Start, school health programs, young men’s clinics, and family planning clinics. The department also promotes research and policy analyses that improve the quality of service delivery programs.

The Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) has members from a wide range of academic disciplines concerned with the study of human development. Its purposes are to promote multidisciplinary research in the field of human development, foster the exchange of information among scientists and other professionals in various disciplines, and encourage application of research findings. The Society pursues its goals through its biennial meetings, which attract over 5,000 participants, its three journals, and the activities of its Executive Office in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Office of Policy and Communications in Washington, DC, and various standing committees. The next SRCD Biennial Meeting will take place in Denver, Colorado, April 2-4, 2009. For details please see the Web site: http://www.srcd.org.
