Tampa Bay, FL World Refugee Day 2014

6:15 PM to 7:30 PM EST
Jefferson High School - 4401 West Cypress Street, Tampa, FL

This annual event is coordinated by The Tampa Bay Refugee Task Force whose mission is "Helping refugees to settle, integrate and thrive through support, education and community," and draws over 500 people each year.

This year's theme is "The Journey" and will seek to educate community members on the experiences of refugees as they journey from their home country to their new home in Tampa Bay. A highlight of the event will be a mock refugee camp exhibit put together by a local church youth group which will be staffed by refugees who lived in UNHCR camps prior to their arrival here in the U.S. An interactive timeline display of other refugee journeys will also be created by University of South Florida students based on interviews with local refugees.

The cultural festival will include booths from countries including Former Burma, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Iraq, Iran and many others.

During the formal program from 6:15-7:30, a refugee will share their personal story, a Bosnian folk dance group will perform, and original poem written for the occasion will be read by Tampa Poet Laureate James Tokley. The program will feature other speakers and will conclude with a cultural fashion show.
