Rainbow Welcome Initiative Video Series Highlights LGBT Refugees’ Voices
In 78 countries, individuals are targeted, abused, tortured, and killed because of who they are and who they love. Many individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) have no option but to seek safety and protections as refugees. For those resettling in the United States, they are met with new challenges and obstacles, both as refugees and as members of the LGBT community. “In Our Voices: The Journeys of LGBT Refugees,” a new short video produced by Heartland Alliance International, highlights the courageous stories of a transgender refugee from the Middle East and a lesbian asylee from Central Africa. Learn more about why LGBT refugees flee their countries and what resettlement agencies can do to support them in their time of need. Watch this inspiring video here.
Even in the midst of global violence and prejudice against the LGBT community, we are reminded of people’s innate compassion. In “We’re All in This Together: Refugee Allies Speak Out,” we hear from Iraqi, Bhutanese, and Nigerian refugee allies who passionately support their LGBT brothers, sisters, and neighbors and call on their fellow immigrants to do the same. This powerful short video is the first of its kind. View now and share with others!
Both films were produced with the generous support of the Office of Refugee Resettlement. For additional resources and links to services, visit www.RainbowWelcome.org. Questions and technical assistance requests can be directed to Daniel Weyl at firstname.lastname@example.org.
