Intellectual Disabilities Fact Sheet
The President's Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities (PCPID)
- Nearly 30 million families in the United States, or about one in ten, are directly affected by a person with intellectual disability at some point in their lifetime (Texas Adoption Resource Exchange, 2009).
- Nearly 614,000 children ages 3 to 21 have some level of intellectual disability and need special education in school (i.e. one out of every ten children in special education).
- Although many more want to work and are capable of making contributions to the nation’s workforce, only 31% of individuals with intellectual disabilities are employed total (this includes employment that is not fulltime, integrated, and competitively compensated) [Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 2009].
- Although it has not been found to cause intellectual disabilities, socioeconomic condition has been observed to significantly correlate with increased incidence and prevalence rates for intellectual disabilities.
- Approximately 40% to 50% of the causes of intellectual disabilities currently have no identifiable origin.
- The Committee consists of a maximum of 21 citizen members appointed by the President and thirteen ex officio (Federal Government) members designated by the President.
- The PCPID meets, up to two times a year, and reports its findings to the President of the United States, in accordance with the President’s Executive Order.
Composition of the PCPID
The Committee consists of 21 citizen members appointed by the President and thirteen ex officio (Federal Government) members designated by the President. The thirteen ex officio members include the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Secretary of Education, Secretary of Labor, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Secretary of Commerce, Secretary of Transportation, Secretary of Interior, Secretary of Homeland Security, the Attorney General, the President and CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, the Chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Chair of the National Council on Disabilities and the Commissioner of the Social Security Administration. The ex officio members undertake Committee duties in addition to their daily occupations.
