Promoting A Healthy Head Start
ACF’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. George Askew, recently visited Neighborhood House, a multi-service center in Seattle. Neighborhood House is an ACF-funded community action program and also operates a Head Start program with 172 children speaking 19 languages. Among the many health projects Neighborhood House has instituted are:
• Joining the Seattle Housing Authority in creating 60 housing units called Breathe Easy homes, specially designed to lower asthma triggers, which resulted in significant reduction of childhood illness and medical visits.
• Developing a physical activity program called Be Active Together that addresses identified barriers of low-income families to activity including cost, location, child care, and cultural appropriateness.
• Promoting culturally appropriate health education messages to prevent underage drinking, drug and tobacco use and promote HIV screening.
