NIMH (National Institute for Mental Health) recently conducted a study on behavioral interventions effective for preschoolers with ADHD. Interventions included parent education classes that focused on parenting skills, understanding the child's behavior and development, and ensuring child safety. They also received individualized interventions in the home and at preschool or day care.

Articles and Publications

The Maternal and Child Health Library has developed an electronic guide to resources for professionals on healthy social and emotional development in infants and young children, school-age children, and adolescents. Selected topics include a section for infants and toddlers, developmental stages; factors that impact social and emotional development; policies and programs to promote social and emotional well-being in homes and community settings; and strategies for integrating health, development, and education services. A section for families is also included.

A publication for National Center for Children and Poverty (NCCP) entitled "Child and Youth and Emergency Mental Health Care, a National Problem" reviews current practices for children, youth, and adults visiting emergency rooms for mental health conditions, and makes policy recommendations to improve care and encourage more community-based services.
