About the Campaign

What is human trafficking?

The Department of Health and Human Service's Campaign to Rescue and Restore Victims of Human Trafficking is designed to increase the number of identified trafficking victims and to help those individuals receive the benefits and services needed to live safely in the United States.

The Trafficking Information and Referral Hotline (1-888-3737-888) is a critical component of the Rescue & Restore campaign. The Hotline will help you determine if you have encountered victims of human trafficking, will identify local resources available to help victims, and will coordinate with local social service organizations to assist victims so they can begin the process of restoring their lives.

For more information about the Rescue & Restore campaign in Region 10, please contact Melodie Rothwell at 206-615-2118 or David Nielsen at 206-615-2612.

Region 10 Activities

A critical element of the Rescue & Restore campaign is the development of national and local coalitions who will help to implement the campaign on the ground in communities across the country. Coalition building and public awareness is one of the most powerful remedies for counteracting the effects of human trafficking. Washington State has been a pioneer in this area, by passing state legislation against human trafficking in 2003, as well as the formation of the Washington State Trafficking Task Force in 2002.

Trafficking Response Team (TRT)

In Seattle, continuing efforts made by local organizations to help better serve trafficked individuals gave rise to the Trafficking Response Team (TRT). This team is a direct response to the pioneering work of active individuals' passionate desire to face this problem straight on. The TRT provides comprehensive, culturally sensitive direct services to victims of human trafficking and is also another example of collaboration between social services providers, law enforcement and the judicial system. The TRT will work in collaboration with the Rescue & Restore campaign and will continue to maintain these efforts after the campaign ends.

Washington Advisory Committee on Trafficking

WashACT (Washington Advisory Committee on Trafficking) brings local service groups, law enforcement, and government agencies together with the mission of connecting victims of human trafficking to community resources, and identifying and prosecuting their traffickers. This committee was convened by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Washington and the U.S. Department of Justice.
