Asset Building Coalition and the State of New Mexico are Collaborating for the Benefit of Foster Youth

New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department Youth Services was introduced to Prosperity Works through the ACF Region VI Regional Conference call and consultants, Angela Duran and Wanda DeBruler.  Sharon Henderson of Prosperity Works provided information about their organization’s focus and they shared information about the needs of youth who are emancipating from foster care.  The two organizations discussed the possibility of doing a pilot project together in a particular region of the state, however, when the Client and Family Services Innovation and Implementation Act came out with the requirement to get credit reports for youth in care, Sharon at Prosperity Works was the first person called upon.  In New Mexico the Youth Transition Specialists (Chafee IL workers) complete this task and Sharon agreed to train the staff to effectively obtain the reports.  Sharon’s training went above and beyond expectations by creating binders for each member of the staff that included handouts, sample letters, a write up of the work California did, and she spent an hour talking to the staff and answering questions.  In addition, Sharon has agreed to be the point of contact for the State of New Mexico staff as they go about implementing the credit counseling process.  Since this project, Sharon has been a great resource to the State of New Mexico and a solid relationship has been formed that holds much promise for the future.
