Building Partnerships at the Homeless Veterans’ Stand Down

In November we served as a partner and volunteer for the 2013 North Texas Homeless Veterans’ Stand Down in Dallas, Texas. The event was held at the Veterans’ Resource Center on South Lancaster Road.  Marjorie Petty, HHS Regional Director, made opening remarks along with Mike Rawlings, Mayor, City of Dallas, and Jeffery Milligan, Director, Veterans Administration of North Texas.  The event utilized an estimated 300 volunteers and 25 agency representatives from various community and faith-based organizations and groups.  These agencies and organizations provided legal services, dental screenings, eye examinations, haircuts, clothing, personal hygiene kits, and information about a range of community resources and services.

We developed the official event map and provided the veterans with information related to accessing the Affordable Care Act Marketplace, and accessing Child Support Enforcement benefits and services.

This event also allowed for a partnership between the HHS Regional Director and the Mayor of Dallas to discuss the possibility of HHS employees participating on the city’s homeless committee along with other federal agencies, such as the Housing and Urban Development.  This event also allowed us to interact, network, and exchange information while working alongside our partners from other agencies and organizations.
