The Personal Responsibility and Work Reconciliation Act of 1996 provided tribes with the opportunity to operate child support programs. The Office of Child Support Enforcement (OCSE) can make direct funding to Federally-recognized Tribes to operate child support programs. Two regulations, 25 CFR Part 309 & 310 were issued in August 2000. The interim final regulation (309) allows for direct funding to tribes currently operating a child support system. The proposed final (310) will allow funding to all tribes electing to operate a child support enforcement program. Two tribes in the Region VI are currently recieving funding: the Chickasaw Nation and the Navajo Nation. The Tribes, States, OCSE, and Region VI continue to work together to eliminate barriers and ensure the delivery of child support services to Native American children and families.
