This edition of the ANA Messenger highlights projects focused on language and culture. It is very important to preserve and maintain languages throughout the Tribal community. Language connects people to their ancestors, spirituality, and culture and provides a better sense of who they are.
Language assessment and proficiency tools are often the best gauges of language acquisition. Join the ANA Pacific Region Training and Technical Assistance Center to learn more about how these tools can help you implement a successful language project.
The Native Language Community Coordination Training and Technical Assistance (NLCC TTA) Center connects the NLCC cooperative agreement recipients and provides support to them through training, technical assistance, networking opportunities, Native language resources, tools, and community engagement. The goal of the NLCC TTA Center is to maximize the recipients’ impact on each of their communities’ language revitalization efforts. This website also provides resources to ANA language grantees, applicants, and others working to preserve critically endangered Native American languages.
Published by the U.S. Department of Education, Department of Health and Human Services, and Department of Interior, this report reflects efforts to identify the barriers, levers, and best practices that federal agencies can use to better support Native American languages. The information used to generate these recommendations include Tribal Consultation, listening sessions, dialogues at two Native American Languages Summits as well as information from research and other reports.
Developed by First Peoples' Cultural Council, the Language Nest Online Toolkit is a collection of resources for language nest programs in First Nations' communities.
Successful grantees from the Office of English Language Acquisition at the Department of Education and ANA share stories about their efforts to train the next generation of Native American language teachers.
In this compendium (PDF), we share ANA language project reports organized by state from 2010-2012 as a way to demonstrate the breadth and diversity of language activities funded under our Native Languages program area.
