HHS releases $187.4 million to states to help offset energy costs for low-income households
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is releasing $187.4 million to states to help low-income homeowners and renters meet rising home energy costs.
“High temperatures translate into high energy bills for families who are already struggling to make ends meet,” said George Sheldon, HHS acting assistant secretary for the Administration for Children and Families. “These funds will lower energy-related costs for low-income families to help keep them cool and safe throughout the summer.”
The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) assists qualified families with their home energy needs such as heating in the winter, cooling their homes in the summer, and insulating their homes to make them more energy efficient. By doing so, families are able to pay for heating and electricity, make weather-related improvements to their homes and prevent service interruptions.
The latest funding amount supplements the $3.065 billion in LIHEAP block grants made available earlier in the federal fiscal year to states, territories, tribes and the District of Columbia.
