ACF plays a significant role in our nation’s human services response to Presidentially declared disasters and public health emergencies. When activated to support a Disaster Human Services Case Management or Repatriation mission, ACF provides assistance to disaster survivors and to partners such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the American Red Cross, and to states, tribes, territories, and ACF programs and grantees.

Repatriation is the return of a U.S. citizen from a foreign country. The U.S. Repatriation Program provides temporary assistance to citizens and their dependents to return home following a Department of State coordinated mass evacuation.

Since 2002, an average of 151 federally recognized disasters and emergencies strike the U.S. each year. How high is your family's risk in a disaster?

In order to reduce your child’s fears of Ebola, it is best to limit his or her exposure to TV reports on the disease. You may also need to monitor your child’s use of social media and the internet. Be cautious about discussing Ebola where children may overhear. If your children ask questions, make time to listen to their concerns and answer their questions.

For parents and guardians of the more than one million children from birth to age five who receive comprehensive services each day through Head Start and Early Head Start programs, as well as for Head Start program staff members, the recent reports of patients with Ebola Virus Disease in the United States can be understandably concerning. Head Start and Early Head Start programs are encouraged to use this fact sheet to answer questions staff may have and support staff, children, and families.

This Information Memorandum transmits a FEMA Fact Sheet regarding reimbursement for child care services during federally declared major disasters and emergencies and provides guidance to CCDF grantees regarding certain reimbursable activities. Grantees are encouraged to share this guidance with their State or local emergency management officials.

Office of Human Services Emergency Preparedness and Response news

This Information Memorandum provides guidance to assist Lead Agencies in the development of comprehensive emergency preparedness and response plans for child care and the CCDF program. The Office of Child Care (OCC) recommends that each Lead Agency develop a plan to address preparedness, response, and recovery efforts specific to child care services and programs. In addition to this guidance, Attachment A provides resources from OCC and other partner agencies and organizations that are available to assist Lead Agencies in emergency preparedness and response planning.
