Reinforcing the critical role fathers play in the lives of their children is the focus of a new series of public service announcements (PSAs) released today by HHS’ Administration for Children and Families.

HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt today announced the release of $600 million in disaster and social services assistance to help those impacted by hurricanes, floods and other natural disasters in 2008 as well as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The number of children who were maltreated declined between fiscal years 2006 and 2007 according to “Child Maltreatment 2007,” an annual report whose release by HHS’ Administration for Children and Families (ACF) marks the beginning of National Child Abuse Prevention Month. According to the report, an estimated 794,000 children were determined to be victims of maltreatment in 2007, down from 904,000 victims in 2006.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced plans to make $1 billion available for the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) program. Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the new resources will be allocated to states across the country. States will distribute the new funding to community groups that help Americans through tough economic times.

U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Deputy Secretary William Corr announced the appointment of Eskinder Negash, currently Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), to be Director of the Office of Refugee Resettlement in the Administration for Children and Families.
