Officials from the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) and representatives from 42 North American tribes attended the signing of the ACF tribal consultation policy on Aug. 18 that sets official protocol on how the agency engages tribes in consultation on legislation, regulations and policies that affect the services delivered to federally recognized tribes.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is releasing more than $863 million today to grantees to help low-income households with their heating and other home energy costs under the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). HHS is releasing the remaining funds, made available by the Consolidated Appropriation Act, 2012 (Public Law 112-74), to states, territories, tribes and the District of Columbia.

The Office of Community Services is awarding 15 Assets for Independence (AFI) grants today totaling nearly $4.1 million to community-based organizations and government agencies under HHS’ Administration for Children and Families. The Administration for Native Americans (ANA) is awarding approximately $13.8 million in grants to preserve Native American language and culture. The recipients include 13 projects ($2.8 million) funded through the Preservation and Maintenance program, which provides grants for curriculum development, teacher training, and technology used to disseminate and preserve Native American languages. Another five grants ($1.1 million) will be awarded through the Esther Martinez Initiative, which provides funds for immersion-based language training, survival schools, and restoration programs.

The 20,000th foster child has been adopted after being listed on AdoptUSKids.org, a national website that links prospective adoptive families with children in need of permanent families. The website is funded through a cooperative agreement between HHS’ Administration for Children and Families (ACF) and the Adoption Exchange Association. The website contains photos and demographic information on children in the public foster care system.
