This letter from the Children’s Bureau to child welfare directors describes updates made to the Foster Youth to Independence initiative, which is coordinated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and is designed to prevent and end homelessness among youth with a current or prior history of child welfare involvement.

This webpage provides information to states planning their NYTD Review on why and how a state should involve young people in their NYTD Review process. It discusses ways a state can support young people including providing resources, ideas on how to prepare them, debriefing, networking opportunities, and compensation ideas to incentivize participation. There is also a checklist with recommended timelines to assist states in when they should engage state young people. The checklist references specific section within the Guide to the NYTD Review.

This guide is intended for use during the onsite visit to collect information that describes the state’s National Youth in Transition Database (NTYD) implementation and ongoing efforts from a variety of perspectives.

These reports highlight information on key elements from State NYTD data submissions compiled by the Children’s Bureau.

Tailored technical assistance (TA) is available to states that are working with the Children’s Bureau to plan for their NYTD Review on ways to engage young adults (ages 18−25) with current or former foster care experience to participate as a state NYTD Reviewer and in their state’s ongoing NYTD efforts.
