RE:  Changes in Currency Conversion Policy in British Columbia and Manitoba, Canada

Attachment: New Currency Conversion Procedures in British Columbia and Manitoba (PDF)

Dear Colleague:

Attached please find information from British Columbia and Manitoba, Canada about recent changes to their currency conversion policies for child support cases.  Recent amendments to their law and/or regulations allow the Maintenance Enforcement Programs in these provinces to convert child support orders set in foreign currency on a periodic basis.  These changes will allow arrearages on cases with British Columbia and Manitoba to align more accurately with those in U.S. state and tribal child support agencies.

For complete information about processing child support cases with Canada, please see A Caseworker’s Guide to Processing Cases with Canada (PDF) (IM-13-02).  Page 9 in the guide describes the currency conversion and arrearage records issue that British Columbia and Manitoba are addressing with these new procedures.

If you have questions about this information, please contact the British Columbia or Manitoba Maintenance Enforcement Programs directly, or OCSE at ocseinternational@acf.hhs.gov.

Thank you for your efforts to support families in international cases.

Sincerely,

Vicki Turetsky
Commissioner
Office of Child Support Enforcement
