Create a 50 States/Territories map when you want to display state/territory specific information or data  and help your audience quickly access content of interest to them. 

When to Avoid

Avoid using maps to display full-page information or quick facts.

Editing Screen

The map content type has several fields on the back end that must be completed to help Drupal better organize and display the blog content properly and improve search engine optimization. Required fields are marked with an asterisk (*).

Before creating a map, you must select a map type to create. This can not be changed while editing. If you would like to create a different map type, you will have to start over.

  1. Title*: Enter a descriptive title for your map. Use keywords in the title for better SEO.
  2. Permalink*: The permalink will generate automatically when the title is entered the first time. It may be adjusted. It will not automatically update when the page title is changed. This is the URL for the page.
  3. Summary*: Enter a brief description to provide context for your map content. This will appear in search results.
  4. Body: Provide background information or more context about your map, if needed.
  5. Map Legend:  The Map Legend allows the user to create a color coded or monochromatic key for the map. The picture below displays the Map Legend jar. However, it is not required for monochromatic maps. 
  6. Map Data*The Map Data section changes across the three different map content types. In the 50 States Map Data jar, a jar is available for each state and territory. These Map Items cannot be added or removed. They are already prepopulated.  If you do not have information for a specific state or territory simply include N/A - no data available in the body and hover content fields.

    *Below is a picture of a collapsed Map Item jar, which is nestled in the Map Data section.

  • Map Item*: In the 50 States map, the Map Item jar includes the: Legend Key ID, State Abbreviation, State Territory/Region Name, Link, Body and Hover Content section. The picture below is a collapsed Map Item jar.
  • Legend Key ID*: This  number denotes the code for a map value in the legend.
  • Acronym*: This field is a drop-down menu that displays a abbreviated state names. 
  • State/Territory/Region Name*: Enter the name of the state, territory or region name in this field.
  • Link: Enter an internal or external URL like https://example.com . Link Text: Enter a descriptive title or call to action to let readers know where the link will take them. The link title is limited to 128 characters maximum.
  • Body: Enter content to associate with the respective state or territory.  This content will appear below the map associated when the state is selected. 
  • Hover Content: Enter data to display when the user's cursor is over the state or territory.

7. Office Information*: Select the relevant office and editorial group from the drop-down menus. Select date for publication date which will display when map is published.

8. Map Options*: Select how links will display with the Link Display* dropdown menu. There are three options that trigger an action that is enabled when checked and disabled when unchecked:: ’Show When Printed,’ ’Show Additional Information on Hover,’ ’Display Map.’ Color Display’: Allows the user to select whether the map will have no color, be monochromatic, or multi-color. Legend Display*: Gives you the option to display the legend on the bottom or left side of the map. 

9. *Taxonomy: Select the relevant terms from the drop down menus to properly tag the map on the back-end and enable filtering on the site: Audiences, *ACF Issues, Programs and Program Topics. ACF Issues taxonomy is required for publishing.

10. Save/Preview/Delete*: Use these buttons to save, preview, or delete to modify the map. Always save before previewing changes.
