Teen Dating Violence
Teen dating violence is a pattern of abusive behaviors that can be physical, sexual, verbal, or emotional, used to control an intimate or dating partner. Teen dating violence occurs among youth between the ages of 13-19.
According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Latinos make up 23 percent of youth under the age of 18 in the U.S., and in some states, including California and New Mexico, Latino youth make up the largest ethnic group. One in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner, a figure that far exceeds rates of other types of youth violence. It is a huge problem for Latino youth.
The good news is that 4 in 5 Latinos are willing to talk to their children and the children in their lives about healthy relationships, and more than half of Latino parents have talked about domestic violence with their child, based on the No Más study that the National Latin@ Network, a project of Casa de Esperanza, conducted in 2015. If you are experiencing abuse or you know a teen that is experiencing abuse, you are not alone and there is help.

Open Enrollment for 2016 health insurance is over — but you may still have options
If you didn’t meet the Open Enrollment deadline, you may still be able to get 2016 health insurance if you:
- Have a qualifying life event — like getting married, having a baby, or losing health coverage — that qualifies you for a Special Enrollment Period.
- Qualify for free or low-cost coverage through Medicaid and CHIP. You can apply any time, all year.
- If you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to change plans or enroll for the first time, you’ll have 60 days from the life event to enroll. After you report life changes to the Marketplace, you’ll get a new eligibility notice that will explain if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period and lower costs.
- Learn more about reporting life changes and applying with a Special Enrollment Period

Recognizing the Power in Communities to Address Child Maltreatment
Child Welfare Program Specialist Rosie Gomez writes how the Children's Bureau recognizes the tremendous power in communities to solve the problem of child abuse and neglect. "We know that families don’t exist in a bubble," she writes. "They are affected by community factors around them. Housing, healthcare, jobs—all of these matter in understanding the types of stresses that families are under. Families whose lives are touched by the child welfare or prevention systems are frequently experiencing multiple, complex needs." Learn how a new film, Building Community, Building Hope, commissioned by the Children's Bureau spotlights three innovative programs working to prevent and respond to child maltreatment.
