HHS’ Administration for Children and Families Announces the Release of $338 million to Assist Vulnerable Families and Communities

November 18, 2022

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced the release of $338 million in funding for the Social Services Block Grant (SSBG), to help states and territories tailor social service programming for their population’s needs. This funding is the first allocation of SSBG funding that will be provided to states and territories this fiscal year.

“SSBG is a critical resource in helping states and territories provide vital services for the most vulnerable members of our communities including children, individuals with disabilities, and older adults,” said ACF Assistant Secretary January Contreras. “Last year alone, states and territories used SSBG funding to provide services to almost 21 million individuals, including 9.5 million children, underscoring the wide reach that SSBG funding has.”

SSBG is one of seven anti-poverty programs administered by ACF’s Office of Community Services. It is a flexible funding source that allows states and territories to provide essential social services that help reduce dependency and promote self-sufficiency; protect children and adults from neglect, abuse, and exploitation; and help individuals who are unable to take care of themselves to stay in their homes or to find the best institutional arrangements.

“SSBG helps fund a variety of life-changing programs,” said Dr. Lanikque Howard, director of ACF’s Office of Community Services. “Across the country, SSBG funding is used to help support employment training programs, child care and child welfare services, independent living activities, and health and transportation services. This funding release will make a tangible difference in the lives of those most in need.”
