The Preschool Development Grants Birth Through Five (PDG B-5) Initiative provides competitive grants to states to strengthen their mixed delivery system of programs and services for young children. The goals of the program are to improve the school readiness of children from families with low incomes. and to improve transitions from early childhood programs into elementary school. States are to improve collaboration and coordination among existing programs in order to increase access to programs, improve program quality, and maximize parental choice and meaningful engagement.
There are two kinds of PDG B-5 grants. Initial grants support states in conducting a comprehensive statewide birth through five needs assessment followed by in depth strategic planning. Renewal grants provide funds to states to carry out the activities in their strategic plan.
In December 2018, 46 States/Territories were awarded an initial grant. In December 2019, 20 of these states were awarded renewal grants and an additional six States/Territories were awarded initial grants. In April 2020, three more of the original 46 states were awarded renewal grants. Finally, in December 2020, five of the six states/territories that received an initial grant in 2019 were awarded a renewal grant.
- Of the 52 Initial Grants listed, 6 Initial grant were awarded in 2019 to: the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, Idaho, Puerto Rico, Wisconsin and Wyoming; the other 46 Initial Grants went to the remaining states in 2018.
- Of the 28 Renewal Grants, 3 were awarded in April 2020 to Kansas, Nebraska, and South Carolina, 5 were awarded in December 2020 to Guam, Idaho, Puerto Rico, Wisconsin and Wyoming, and the other 20 Renewal grants went to the remaining states listed in 2019.
