Project Description
Chicanos Por La Causa, Inc. (CPLC) will use CED Social Enterprise funds to support its Social Enterprise Empowerment Initiative in Maricopa County, Arizona. CED Social Enterprise Funds will help establish the Social Enterprise Empowerment Fund to support the creation and expansion of social enterprises and provide incubation, technical assistance, wraparound services, and health and human services. Through the incubation program, women-owned social enterprises will have access to free, shared space, technical support and trainings in individual or group settings, online, in-person and on demand providing flexibility, and equipment and child care and transportation subsidies. CPLC aims to recruit 30 social enterprises to apply to participate in the incubator.

Project Description
Pacific Gateway Center (PGC) will use CED Social Enterprise funds for the PGC Social Enterprise Program (PGC-SEP), which will expand PGC’s efforts to support the start-up and expansion of social enterprise businesses throughout communities in Honolulu, Hawaii. PGC will use CED Social Enterprise funds to create a low-interest micro-loan fund and provide infrastructure improvements (space and equipment) for potential business clients incubated through PGC’s three existing incubators: farm incubator, culinary business incubator, and retail restaurant business incubator (Paradise Enterprise Center Business Incubator), and PGC’s new service center. The project will begin with a focus on expanding PGC’s three existing businesses, The Pig & The Lady (TPL), a pop-up restaurant which is now one of the top 5 restaurants in Honolulu; Grown with Aloha, which extracts beneficial oils and bi-products from farm crop; and HealthChoice, which hires potential PGC referrals and provides informational services to other social service programs. PGC-SEP will use its existing network to recruit new clients to participate in its incubation services. Additionally, CED Social Enterprise Funds will be used to provide technical assistance and trainings on business related principles and addressing challenges, direct social services, access to business assistance opportunities like credit and investment or access to facilities and equipment, and support to help social enterprises thrive with guidance on capacity, coaching, capital, connections and contracts to ensure client’s business plan is on track. This project will serve communities from Kalihi to Chinatown, a high poverty area, 80% of which are located in Hawaii’s Opportunity Zone.

Project Description
Kentucky Highlands Community Development Corporation (KHCDC) will use CED Social Enterprise funds to expand its existing incubator, Kentucky Highlands Innovation Center for Social Enterprises, resulting in the creation and expansion of social enterprises in the Appalachian region of southeastern Kentucky. The Kentucky Highlands Innovation Center for Social Enterprises project will recruit new and existing social enterprises and deliver business development services and technical assistance to grow viable enterprises that address local needs, and to provide social support and business loans to viable social enterprises that can create and sustain new full-time jobs for low-income individuals and help the target population overcome barriers to achieve self-sufficiency. Specifically, CED Social Enterprise funds will be used to provide loans to participating social enterprises, provide incubator services, capitalize the Self-Sufficiency Loan Fund (SSLF) for employees facing barriers, support a full-time credit union counselor to manage the SSLF, and support staff providing direct services to the social enterprises. The first social enterprise to be assisted will be American Health Management, Inc., the second largest provider of adult daycare services in Kentucky. Additionally, they allow low-income seniors to live at home with a higher quality of life, allow family members to pursue employment efforts, create job opportunities for individuals with low income, and provide services to reduce barriers to employment. The project will serve 22 rural counties, including 20 Persistent Poverty Counties and 28 designated Opportunity Zone census tracts.

Project Description
Coastal Enterprises, Inc. (CEI) will used CED Social Enterprise funds to support the Incubating Child Care Businesses in Rural Maine Initiative in Maine. The Incubating Child Care Businesses in Rural Maine Initiative will provide capital and business start-up and services training for child care owners and their employees. In addition, new child care owners will receive business advising, child care management training, project management, financial wellness education, travel, and technical assistance Child care businesses are social enterprises that eliminate a barrier many parents face when wanting to work, provide critical early education for children, and serve as employers themselves. Together, the 10-15 new child care social enterprises will add 400 to 550 new child care slots, enabling at least 350 more Maine parents to work full-time. The incubator will also provide opportunities to bring child care entrepreneurs together physically at CEI’s Waterville, Maine office and will also offer virtual capabilities. The Incubating Child Care Businesses in Rural Maine Initiative will create jobs and businesses in Maine’s most distressed rural counties with high rates of poverty, unemployment and substance abuse.

Project Description
Economic and Community Development Institute (ECDI) will use CED Social Enterprise funds to support the Social Enterprise Hub, an incubator that will support the growth of social enterprise businesses in Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio. The Social Enterprise Hub will provide loans to participating social enterprises, provide incubator services, technical assistance, and access to support staff who will provide direct services to the social enterprises. This will allow the social enterprises to become profitable and create jobs for the low-income, target populations. It will incubate for-profit and non-profit enterprises who are committed to 1) reinvesting profits back into the community to solve an issue or help a specific segment of the population, or 2) implementing supportive employment practices that center on inclusivity and upward mobility of populations facing significant barriers to employment and self-sufficiency. Initially, the Social Enterprise Hub will support five social enterprises: First Step, a transitional job placement model that provides wrap-around services, will utilize co-working space and technical assistance; the 21st Century Edu-Care Center, which will utilize loan capital to continue to provide culturally competent child care and early education services to immigrants and refugees; Chateau Hough, an urban vineyard and winery which will utilize loan capitalize and individualized support services; Braids by Brandy, a natural hair salon that will help formerly incarcerated women re-enter their communities with opportunities to gain certification as a natural hair stylist; and Barroluco, an Argentinian food truck that will expand into an event space. This project will serve communities in an Opportunity Zone.

Project Description
Northwest Side Community Development Corporation (NWSCDC) will use CED Social Enterprise funds to launch the NWSCDC Social Enterprise Incubator, which will support minority and women-owned social enterprise businesses throughout Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Funds will be used to provide small business loan financing, business technical assistance, and other key targeted social and economic support services to qualifying social enterprise business expansion projects. Funds will also be used to support a NWSCDC Social Enterprise Incubator Manager, a position which will have primary oversight of the incubator activities and will provide tailored technical assistance to participating businesses. The NWSCDC Social Enterprise Incubator will assist social enterprise businesses to grow new jobs which are accessible by public transit, can be filled by low-income individuals, and that will provide dependable hours, benefits, wage growth and advancement opportunities that will lead to self-sufficiency. NWSCDC will also partner with local TANF agency MAXIMUS, Employ Milwaukee, and Wisconsin Community Services (serving re-entry individuals) to provide social support and wrap-around services. NWSCDC has engaged with prospective social enterprise business partners, and plans to work with 10 participating business for the incubator each year. Initially, the NWSCDC Social Enterprise Incubator will work with six businesses: PepperPot Catering, a Jamaican food takeout and catering service; Abundant Living Services, an adult residential facility; School Bus Services of WI, a three-year-old school bus company; Riley’s Room, a child care center for children with developmental disabilities; PumpFive, an early stage technology logistics company that delivers gasoline directly to vehicles; and Jonco Industries, a veteran-owned manufacturing business (formerly Goodwill Industries). The project will serve low-income individuals in a predominantly African-American and is a very low-income service area, which includes local Opportunity Zones.
