Cuatro Puertas (CP) will use $798,280 in CED funds to fundamentally rebuild the seed industry in New Mexico through organic and sustainable seed stewardship. Once a thriving economic sector of the agricultural community, the number of seed growers has dwindled to a handful. By focusing on regionally adapted organic, open pollinated seed production, new jobs will be created for seed growers, biologists, soil technicians, and complementary businesses like beekeepers, compost, equipment, and tool providers specific to the industry. Open pollinated seed can be saved, thus allowing growers to continue adapting these varieties to their specific environment. CP will provide specialized technical assistance for seed growing, access to seed stock, cleaning equipment, and financial assistance through IDAs (matched savings accounts) to support these new growers. This project will create 40 new, full-time jobs. |
